Black Future ’88 has been announced as coming soon to the Nintendo Switch. Developed by SuperScarySnakes and published by Good Shepherd Entertainment, the 2D synth-punk roguelike action shooter is set in a dystopian world where the year is always 1988.
In Black Future ’88, you play as one of the few remaining survivors of a nuclear disaster. You adventure through a procedurally generated tower, racing to the top to kill the tower’s architect, Duncan. The plot twist is that if you don’t make use of buffs and curses along the way, you won’t make it in time and your heart will explode. There are several characters to select from and the trailer boasts over 50 weapons and buffs to choose from.
The game will be available to play single-player or in two-player local co-op. There will also be daily challenges and a global leaderboard, although there aren’t any further details about the challenges at this time.
Black Future ’88 will also be released on Windows PC later in the year.
SuperScarySnakes is described as a “mostly one-man studio”. Based in Oakland, California, this is the first game they have released. The art for the game was done by Baltimore based artist Zac Bolubasz.
