Fallout 76 is a buggy, incomplete, asset flipped, cash grab of a game, but we’ve already covered that. These past few days a new scandal has arisen around Fallout 76, and no it isn’t even their terrible refund policy. It’s something far worse.
The Fallout 76: Power Armor Edition seems like one of the cooler collectors editions around. For the “low” price of $200 USD you can get various nifty collectors items as seen below pulled directly from the Amazon page for the PC edition.
Now that all sounds great, even if the price is a bit high, but it is a collectors edition. They are usually quite expensive. The problem arrived when many purchasers found their “Canvas Carrying Bag” being anything but canvas, instead turning out to be a cheaper and lower quality nylon bag.
Understandably, many were upset by this and reached out to Bethesda, and Bethesda’s various responses did nothing to turn the tides of displeasure. Below is the response Imgur user Lantern Cupcakes received from Bethesda’s Customer Support.
Additionally here is an email received from Bethesda Gear Store by Imgur user krcm0209.
In response to the above email from the gear store support employee making the rounds of the internet Bethesda posted this official statement.
"The Bethesda Store's Support member is a temporary contract employee and not directly employed by Bethesda or Bethesda Game Studios. We apologize to the customer who took the time to reach out. The support response was incorrect and not in accordance with our conduct policy. Unfortunately, due to unavailability of materials, we had to switch to a nylon carrying case in the Fallout 76: Power Armor Edition. We hope this doesn’t prevent anyone from enjoying what we feel is one of our best collector’s editions."
While clarifying that the gear store support contact was incorrect about the prototyping, Bethesda doubled down on the simple lack of materials. However they did finally decide to offer recompense for not fulfilling what was promised, as can can be seen in the official tweet below.
For reference, 500 Atoms in Fallout can be bought for $5 USD. A mere five dollars of in-game currency, in their game that many people don’t want to play anyways because of it’s current state. As compensation for having ripped of customers and fans of the series, who were already disgruntled about the game state of Fallout 76. Some alternatives could be a full refund, or the production and shipment of replacement bags, and hopefully the individuals that were mislead will get their due compensation. If Bethesda does not handle this well they very well could have both criminal and civil cases against them for false advertising. Bethesda has truly outdone themselves this time.
Bethesda has announced they will be producing and shipping a canvas bag to all purchasers of the Fallout 76 Power Armor Edition. Fulfilling the original promised merchandise, despite their original assertion that they were not planning on doing anything about it.
